‘Prelude in D Minor, Op. 11’ is part of the ‘Prelude Collection.’ During these times, Katie had her studio set up with various still life compositions in every corner and spent her evenings studying light while practicing painting them. When her friends would come visit, they couldn’t help but become paintings themselves within these beautiful designs.

This painting was inspired by a New Year’s eve night. Shannon is holding Katie’s mask she found in Venice on a family trip to celebrate her sister’s wedding. She carried it all through their European travels, carefully carrying it separately in a gift box, as to not damage it as they explored and boarded countless trains. The mask carries a story of adventure and beauty.

Katie fell in love with the soft teal feathers on the top of the mask. The warm darks and soft edges were a delightful challenge to describe in paint. Also in this painting is a small replica of one of the lion statues found on the Palazzo Medici in Florence. The two carolers are her Aunt’s New England winter collectables she would display around the holidays. A fun study in light and shadow. The painting within the painting is one Katie had hanging on her wall at the time titled, ‘Coastal Maine.’ It was painted en plein air on a trip up the Maine Coast and is featured in her book, “Alla Prima II Companion: Materials Tools and Techniques” starting on pg. 70. ‘Prelude in D Minor, Op.11’ can be found on pg 146 in the Studio Task section.
